This was an exciting and eventful summer at Making Contact, especially as we had Alex Corey join us as our summer intern! Like the journalists we are, we had to interview him about his time at Making Contact. Be sure to check out his answers below!

1.Tell us about your journalism background. How’d you get into it and why?

Well in the past I’ve done a wide variety of reporting, from in-depth science coverage to gonzo reporting on street racing. But if we’re starting at the beginning, journalism was something I tripped and fell into. During junior college, I was studying to be an audio engineer and had a professor who required us to do weekly song breakdowns to train our ears to notice the little things in a mix. He was a big fan of my write-ups and when the time came for me to be placed as an engineer or go on to a four-year degree I decided to lean into journalism and it’s been a great ride so far.

2. What are you most excited about of your time at Making Contact this summer?

I’m ecstatic about the social media side of things and getting a chance to understand the ins & outs of long-form audio pieces.

3. What stories are missing from the mainstream conversation, in your opinion?

The mainstream conversation is missing city planning-focused think pieces. There’s been a large upheaval against the current state of infrastructure and city planning but I’m shocked there isn’t more solutions-focused journalism on the topic.

4. What journalistic outlet or platform do you think is doing it “right?”

I feel like; Gothamist, Hellgate, Jacobin, More Perfect Union, Unicorn riot, Mashable, Road & Track, Jalopnik, and Making Contact are doing an amazing job.

5. If you could time travel, would you rather go to the future or the past?

I’d go with the future, I’d be hyped to see how music, interior design, fashion, and geopolitics shift in a few decades.

6. What would the title of your autobiography be?

“Spike: How looking like nobody else got me in everywhere”

7. If you could spend a whole day with a notable person, dead or alive, who would it be?

Oh that’s an easy one, James Baldwin, I’d have so many questions and would love to be in the presence of such an interesting mind.

8. What else should we know about you?!

Well I’m from a small town outside of Dallas (yes I’m not happy with the Mavericks and the Stars currently) but these days I’m a Grad student living in Brooklyn. I’m a massive fan of Vintage clothing, off-kilter interior design, Boiler room sets, Book Club Radio, Kendrick Lamar, Motorcycles, Car Culture, Micromobility devices, and walkable cities.
