With Anthony Kennedy announcing his retirement from the Supreme Court this week, Trump has a chance to replace him and move the court even further to the right.
Scores of the hard-fought rights: of Black people, of women seeking abortion care, of travelers from Muslim countries, immigrants, and LGBTQIA people… are under attack. Amidst this, communities will strategize, organize and celebrate as we learn from history.
This week, we go back to the night in June 1969 at the New York City Stonewall Inn that sparked the LGBT rights movement. On this episode, we’ll hear about the day that galvanized a generation and the continued fight for LGBT civil rights. The first Pride parade took place in June 1970 marking the 1st anniversary of the trans-P.O.C.-led Stonewall Uprising. Michael Schirker and David Isay bring us an oral history Remembering Stonewall: The Birth of a Movement.
We’ll also hear from Michelangelo Signorile, Editor of the Huffington Posts’ Queer Voices, about “our victory blindness” and the right-wing backlash. At a New America NYC forum in 2015, Signorile speaks about asserting our full demands even amidst some progress. It’s a central theme in his book, “It’s Not Over, Getting to Beyond Tolerance Defeating Homophobia and Winning True Equality.”
