For most, Labor Day is just another national holiday – a day off from work, time to spend with families and friends. The beaches and parks are packed and the roads congested, as everyone says goodbye to another summer gone by.
But on this edition of Making Contact, we focus on the root of this American holiday: the contemporary condition of American labor.
Includes: Day laborers and discrimination in Seattle, WA; the recent AFL-CIO rift; music and labor activism.
Featuring:
Hilary Stern, director, CASA Latina; Orfilia, owner, Salon de Orfilia; Gary Aburub, cafĂ© owner; Daniel Anguiano, coordinator, Day Worker Center; Karen Keiser, communications director, Washington State Labor Council; Mike Zuver, security guard and SEIU organizer; Tom Leedham, treasury secretary, Teamster’s Local 206 in Portland; Steve Williamson, King County Labor Council; Julius Margolin, labor activist and former merchant marine; Faith Petrick, folk singer; Liliana Herrera, musician; Rick and Memo, hip hop artists.
This week’s host: Tena Rubio. Contributing producers: Sarah Gustavus, Tom Herriman, Douglas Calvin.
