We may find ourselves thinking think that democracy is limited to Election Day. But what are people in the United States doing on a daily basis to assert their democratic rights?

On this edition of Making Contact we take a look at “democracy in action.” We speak with tenants rights activists in the San Francisco area who are fighting for affordable housing.

We also look at a new trend in criminal justice: A predominantly low-income, African American neighborhood in Denver, Colorado, demanded a community court that aims to turn juvenile offenders into active and engaged community members. And, we go to Westminster, Vermont, where students engage in democracy to shape school policy, learning the skills they need to become civic-minded decision makers.

This program has been produced as part of the Public Radio Collaborative series called “Whose Democracy is It?”

Featuring:

Tom Allegretti and his children Kelly, 18, and Jango, 12, members of a San Francisco family facing eviction; Vivian Haine and her 9-year old daughter Jasmine, low-income residents in Oakland, CA.; Lori Kaczanowska, a city attorney in the Cole Community Court, Denver, CO.; Sandra Douglas, a Cole community advocate; Debra Johnson, a mediator in the Cole Middle School in Denver, CO; students from the Cole Middle School in Denver, CO.; and students, teachers and parents at Compass School in Wesminster, VT
